I get excited as soon as I see those fabulous holiday lights go up around the beach, and the homes and the docks get decorated! Whether you’re a long-time resident or a newcomer, these events are sure to add a touch of magic to your holiday season. Let’s dive into my top three picks for this month: the Wrightsville Beach Turkey Trot, Enchanted Airlie, and the Holiday Flotilla.

• Wrightsville Beach Turkey Trot Date: November 23, 2023 Location: Wrightsville Beach Park

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and celebration, and what better way to kick off the holiday season than with the annual Wrightsville Beach Turkey Trot? This 5K race has become a beloved tradition for locals and visitors alike. Lace up your running shoes, put on your best turkey-themed costume, and join in the fun!

The Wrightsville Beach Turkey Trot isn’t just about running; it’s a community event that supports a great cause. Proceeds from the race benefit Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, making it a heartwarming way to give back to the community while staying active. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a casual jogger, the Turkey Trot welcomes participants of all levels.

• Holiday Flotilla Date: November 25, 2023 Location: Intracoastal Waterway

The Wrightsville Beach Holiday Flotilla is a spectacular event that marks the official start of the holiday season in the area. Picture a parade of beautifully decorated boats, each adorned with festive lights, making their way along the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s a visual extravaganza that captivates both young and old.

This maritime celebration isn’t just about watching the boats; it’s an interactive experience. Starting near Palm Tree Island by the drawbridge and ending at the south end of Wrightsville Beach, you can enjoy the festivities from various vantage points along the waterway, and there’s even a judging panel to award prizes for the best boat decorations. The grand finale includes a breathtaking fireworks display that lights up the night sky. Hint: Dockside is a great place to watch! And the Wrightsville Beach Outrigger Canoe Club of which I’m a member, will have a fantastic display on our 6 person outrigger canoes – be sure to vote for your favorite in the boat parade!

• Enchanted Airlie Dates: November 24 & 25 and December 1 – 21 Location: Airlie Gardens

This beloved event transforms Airlie Gardens into a magical wonderland, complete with thousands of twinkling lights, holiday displays, and seasonal music. It’s the perfect opportunity to create lasting memories with family and friends.

Visitors can stroll through the illuminated gardens, warm up with hot cocoa, and even visit Santa himself. The dazzling light displays are a sight to behold and are sure to get you in the holiday spirit. Enchanted Airlie is a cherished tradition that brings the community together and ignites the holiday cheer.
